Two races into the Moto3 season we have yet to see a
single rider take charge of the championship, with Qatar winner Kaito Toba
picking up just six points in Argentina, where Jaume Masia took the victory
after failing to register at Losail. The Japanese rider leads the standings on
31 points with six riders behind him separated by just 10, nine of whom have
previously stepped on the podium at the Circuit of the Americas - venue of this
weekend’s third round. However, Romano Fenati, the Italian who currently lies
fifteenth overall, did win there in both 2016 and 2017.
The Sama Qatar Ángel Nieto Team travels to the USA this
week with regular rider Raúl Fernández and Aleix Viu, who again stands in for
the injured Albert Arenas. Both riders are looking forward to discovering this
circuit for the first time and hoping to enjoy a good feeling on their bikes
that they can convert into strong results on Sunday. Fernández is in ambitious
mood as he targets the front group and another fight for the podium, whilst
Aleix Viu travels to Texas on the back of an exiting weekend in the Junior Moto3
World Championship in Portugal, where he was just unable to complete a stunning
comeback that took him from 23rd to 5th.
Raúl Fernández: “After the race in Argentina where my goal was to
finish in the top ten, we go to another new track for me in Austin. I don’t know
the track so I will have it to learn but if I can manage to run with the front
group on Sunday then I want to fight for the podium. It is clear in my mind that
if we work like we did in Argentina and I can adapt well to the circuit then we
can do a good job.”
Aleix Viu: “I am happy to be racing in the World Championship
again, this time in Austin, and again I want to wish Albert Arenas a swift
recovery. In the meantime my objective is to learn and to gather experience,
enjoy myself on the bike and take some steps to improve on the last race.
I am really excited about going to
Austin.”
